Biography
- Nationally recognized human rights activist
- Immigration and refugee lawyer, in private practice since 1993
- Born in Tanzania in 1963, raised in England and Vancouver
- Graduated from the University of British Columbia Law School in1996
- Member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the British Columbia Bar
- Has lived and worked in the Toronto Centre riding since 1989, currently living in the Church-Wellesley neighbourhood
- Groundbreaker in expanding Canada’s refugee protection on grounds of sexual orientation and gender
- Majority of his legal practice involves representing LGBT people, women fleeing gender violence, and persons living with HIV/AIDS who face persecution in their home countries
- Most recently represented Alvaro Antonio Orozco who was granted a deferral in his deportation to Nicaragua where he faced imprisonment for being gay
- Co-founders and now Secretary-General, of the Canadian Muslim Union
- Founded Salaam, the world’s first LGBT Muslim group in 1991
- Organizer of the 2003 Salaam International Conference, which included the first female-led, mixed-gender Muslim prayer in Canada
- Actively involved in a wide variety of local, national and international HIV/AIDS awareness and service organizations
- Recipient of the Black Cap Community Support Award, HOLA Plaque for Outstanding Support, Pride Toronto 2006 Award For Excellence in Spirituality, and the 2007 Steinert and Ferreiro Award from the Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal
- Chair of Africans In Partnership Against AIDS
- Board member of the 519 Church Street Community Centre
- Served on the Mayor’s Committee on Community and Race Relations.
